TERM 1- Lesson two: 24/09/14

                                                                 24th of September 2014

Personal practice I have done over the week:

  • This week I have been focusing on warming up my voice; to ensure I get the most out of performing my chosen song. The exercise I have worked on varied every day, however here is an example:

Humming- By doing this it helped my voice to open up; whilst creating vibrations in my mouth, neck, lips. therefore this started to prepare my voice for singing.
Scales- I simply went up the scales on a 'arr' and came down on a 'ee' this focused on my pitching to ensure I was able to match it and focusing on my range. I also practice scales to (1, 1-2-1, 1-2-3-2-1) and so on. by doing this it helped me with focusing and working on pitching etc.
fricatives- I did  this with the sounds (fff and SSS). This is short but continues breaths, by doing this it helped me with my breath support.
  • this week I have been looking at different styles of songs e.g. musical theatre, Soul, pop etc. by doing this I found a song called ( I'm Going Down by Mary J Blige) I have been using different warm-ups to prepare myself for this song. I have also been looking at the story and emotion behind the song.
  • Overall I considered this week to be effective because I was really focusing on warming up my voice correctly. However I thought I could of looked at a more variety of songs and practice them more also. Therefore the upcoming week I'am going to try and find the balance between them both. Next week I would hope to have learned the song I'm going down and be ready to perform it for either that week or the following.

In class:

  • Today we started with a group warm-up and then moved onto rehearsing our first ensemble piece which is 'will you still love me tomorrow'. After spending the first 45min on that we then went on by splitting the song into a 3 part harmony. finally we then moved onto our next group song.
Rather be by clean bandit ft Jess Glynn

we were left as a group to rehearse this song and at least make it sound presentable. We first listen to the original song twice through. This was to ensure everyone was familiar with the tune and comfortable singing it. We then sang it with the instrumental. I stopped the song after the chorus because I felt we weren't listening to each other. We went back and performed/sung it again. By doing this it got everyone's focus and we actually started to listen and blend more as a group. The things we did well is sing in pitch and everyone was able to pick up the tune very quickly. The things I think we should improve on is listening to one another and to give everyone a fair chance to talk when planning beforehand. The things I could of done better is focusing on blending rather than trying to develop my own style.
